Here’s a straightforward guide to maintaining sparkling pool water with ease.

Pool Opening (Start of Season)
Before You Begin:
- Have a our friendly water care specialists analyze your water sample any of our Galaxy showrooms.
- Make sure all your pool equipment is in good working order.
1. Test and Balance Your Water:
- Alkalinity: 50–90 ppm
- pH: 7.2–7.6
- Calcium Hardness: 100–400 ppm

2. Run Your Filter:
- Run your pump and filter continuously for the first 24 hours. It’s recommended that your run your filter continuously throughout the swim season.
Why Run Your Pump Continuously? To evenly distribute chemicals and efficiently filter your water, run your pump 24 hours daily during swim season. Continuous filtration keeps your water crystal clear and reduces chemical expenses.
3. Add Chemicals
- Add 2 oz of Advanced Prep® per 1,000 gallons; run your filter for 6 hours after applying.
- Add 1 lb of Galaxy Santizing Granular per 10,000 gallons; run your filter for an additional 12 hours.

When Can I Swim? Wait the total 18 hours filter run-time after adding the initial chemicals needed for starting the swim season. It can take anywhere from 12-24 hours to be ready to swim. When in doubt, test your chlorine levels for a safe-swimming level between 2-5 ppm.
4. Clean or Replace Your Filter
- Use AHH!Some Hot Tub, Swim Spa, and Pool Filter Cleaner to clean your cartridge filter or sand. If you have a sand filter, be sure to backwash.
5. Test & Adjust Advanced Blue Levels
- Use the Advanced® Copper Test Kit to measure your current copper levels.
- Refer to the Advanced Blue Maintenance Dosage Chart provided.
- Find your measured copper level on the vertical axis.
- Find your pool’s volume on the horizontal axis.
- Where these intersect indicates how many ounces of Advanced Blue® to add.

Routine Maintenance (Weekly)
1. Test and Balance Your Water
- Use Insta-Test 4 Plus Test Strips to maintain alkalinity, pH, and calcium hardness level with recommended ranges.
- Use Advanced® Copper Test Kit to maintain the proper Advanced Blue® Levels.
2. Run Filter
- Run your filter continuously (24 hours a day) during the swim season for best results.
3. Weekly Shock Treatment
- Add 1 lb of Galaxy Sanitizing Granular per 10,000 gallons.
- Add 2 oz of Advanced Clear® per 10,000 gallons weekly.
Note: Wait 8-24 hours or until chlorine levels are between 2-5 ppm before swimming again.
Pool Closing (End of Season)
Prepare your for the off-season:
- Balance your water (same as pool opening guidelines).
- Run filter continuously for 24 hours.
- Shock with 1 lb Galaxy Sanitizing Granular per 10,000 gallons; run filter for 4 hours afterward.
- Clean pool thoroughly and backwash sand filters.
- Add 2 oz. of Advanced Clear® per 10,000 gallons.
- Adjust Advanced Blue® dosages according to your copper test results.
Helpful Tips & Common Mistakes to Avoid
Cloudy or Green Water?
- Galaxy Oxidizing Shock and Galaxy Sanitizing Granular can be used to clear up a cloudy or green pool. The water will usually clear within 2-3 days. If your pool remains cloudy or green after 3 days, bring a water sample to your nearest Galaxy showroom for a free professional test and further guidance.
