The 24-foot round is the most popular choice among pool buyers. For ovals, the 15’x30′ is the most common. Both strike a solid balance between space and usability.

Round pools are versatile. They give you plenty of room for swimming, relaxing, and activities without feeling cramped. They’re also the best value. A 27′ round pool holds about 5,000 more gallons than a 15’x30′ oval and costs quite a bit less. Ultimately, they are a better value.

Oval pools are great for yard constraints, swimming laps, or aesthetic preference. Keep in mind that ovals cost more because they require a buttress system to support the water on the longer sides, and they take longer to install.

The shape of your backyard can help guide the decision. A square yard often fits a round pool better. A longer, narrower space may work better with an oval.

With a bigger round pool, you also get more circumference to hang out and relax without constantly being in the splash zone if there are active swimmers around.

What Pool Height Should You Choose?

What Pool Height Should You Choose?

Above ground pools come in 48″, 52″, or 54″ heights. The waterline usually sits about 4 to 6 inches below the top of the wall.

In the premium above ground market, 52″ and 54″ are the most popular. A 48″ pool is generally purchased because it costs less, but we recommend going with 54″.
Kids will enjoy the extra depth as they grow, and adults can still stand comfortably.

How Much Space Do You Need for Installation of an Above Ground Pool?

Pool size is only part of the space equation. You also need room for the “over dig,” which is the extra clearance required for construction.

For a round pool, add about 2.5 feet around the full circumference. So a 21-foot pool needs roughly 23.5 feet of space. You also need at least 7 feet and 1 inch of clearance for equipment access. Please consult with your dealer to smaller access yards.

Oval pools need more room because of the buttress system, typically about 3 extra feet on each side. Some premium oval pools offer buttress-free systems that take up less space and look cleaner. You’ll find that option on higher-end models.

Some manufacturers still use steel rails and steel walls across the board. Doughboy also requires that liners and other aftermarket parts be purchased directly from them to maintain the warranty, which means you pay more over time. 

If you want more depth without compromising the liner, a 54″ flat-bottom pool is the better long-term option.

Liners are made from either recycled or virgin materials. A higher-end, virgin-grade liner is more durable and lasts longer. 

The installation method also plays a role. Traditional, less expensive pools use an overlap system where the liner hangs over the pool wall. It puts more stress on the material, looks less clean, and is harder to replace, especially if you have a deck around the pool. 

Premium pools use a beaded or multi-bead system that clips into the top of the pool wall. It provides a cleaner look, puts less stress on the liner, and makes future replacements much easier.

A quality liner can carry a warranty of 20 years or more, but actual lifespan depends on sun exposure, chemical balance, usage, and general wear. Most well-maintained liners last between 7 and 10 years before needing replacement.

  • Ladders are essential for safe entry and exit. If you have a deck, you’ll need a system that attaches to it. A 36-inch step ladder gives you the widest steps available. If you have young kids, look for a locking ladder that lets you control access when the pool isn’t in use.
  • Fountains help keep the water cool and add a nice visual and sound element to your pool area. 
  • Pool toys, floaties, and lounge chairs make the space more inviting for the whole family.
  • For maintenance, you’ll want a good vacuum (robotic cleaners are the most efficient option), a quality filter system, and the right chemicals for your chosen sanitization method.

What Are the Filter and Pump Options for Above Ground Pools?

You have two main filtration options: sand and cartridge systems.

  • Sand systems use sand to filter debris from the water. They’re reliable and widely used. Under normal conditions, you’ll backwash a sand filter about every two weeks, or when the pressure gauge reads 7 to 10 psi above your normal running pressure.
  • Cartridge systems rely on a replaceable filter element and offer better filtration efficiency with easier maintenance. Premium above ground pools typically use larger cartridge filter systems, similar to what you’d find on an inground pool, with 150 to 200 square foot filters.

Compared to sand, cartridge systems filter down to smaller microns (10 to 20 versus 20 to 40), don’t blow sand back into the pool, and are much easier to maintain and winterize. Sand filters can weigh 200 to 400 pounds, so portability is another consideration.

Some buyers associate cartridge systems with cheap soft-sided pools like Intex, but the premium cartridge systems used on quality above ground pools are a completely different class of equipment.

What Sanitization Options Are Available for Above Ground Pools?

Sanitization keeps your water clean, clear, and safe for swimming. There are several systems to choose from, and each has its own trade-offs.

Saltwater systems use a salt cell to produce chlorine from dissolved salt. They provide a steady, consistent chlorine release and the water tends to feel softer. The downside is that salt can corrode the metal components of an above ground pool over time, and you still have chlorine in the water.

Copper ionization systems use copper electrodes to release ions that kill bacteria and algae. They reduce your need for chemical sanitizers, but may not eliminate the need for supplemental chlorine or bromine entirely.

Inline chlorinators automatically dispense chlorine tablets into the water. They’re low maintenance and provide consistent sanitizer levels, though the ongoing cost of tablets adds up.

Liquid chlorine is affordable and easy to use. It requires more frequent dosing, especially in hot weather, and can cause pH fluctuations that need regular adjustment.

Traditional chlorine tabs are convenient and slow-dissolving. Over time, they can cause stabilizer (cyanuric acid) buildup, which may require you to drain and dilute your water.

Liquid copper systems offer an alternative to chlorine-based sanitizers by using copper to control bacteria and algae. Like other copper systems, they may still need supplemental sanitizer support.

When choosing a system, think about how much hands-on maintenance you want to do, what your budget looks like for ongoing costs, and what kind of water feel you prefer. If you’re not sure, our team at any Galaxy showroom can walk you through the options.

What Happens Before Installation Day?

A smooth installation starts with the right preparation.

  1. First, make sure you have at least 7 feet and 1 inch of clearance for the excavator to access the pool area. Yard disruption is normal during this process, including ruts and holes where equipment operates.
  2. Call your local utility locator service (like OKIE DIG, Arkansas One Call, or 811) to mark underground lines. 
  3. Cap any sprinkler lines near the site if you’re concerned about damage. 
  4. Check the location of your septic tank and field lines.
  5. Check with your city, county, and HOA for any permit or regulation requirements. Some communities have specific rules about pool placement, fencing, and setback distances.

You don’t need to level the ground yourself. We handle grading and leveling, with up to 6 inches of grading included at no extra charge. If your site requires more than that, there may be an additional cost. If you plan to bury the pool at all, it’s recommended not to exceed 18 inches in depth.

What Are the Electrical Requirements for an Above Ground Pool?

You’ll need a dedicated 110V, 20-amp electrical outlet near the pool, protected by a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI). Do not use an extension cord. It doesn’t meet electrical codes and will void the pump manufacturer’s warranty.

Schedule your electrical work on the day of or after installation, not before. This ensures the electrician can run the correct length and burial for the wiring based on the actual pool and equipment placement.

What Should You Expect on Installation Day?

Your backyard will be a construction zone during installation. There will be excavation, dirt displacement, and materials staged around the pool site.

After installation, you’ll have some work to do as the homeowner. You’re responsible for filling the pool with water, assembling and placing the steps (once the pool is 100% full), and handling any grading, dirt removal, or landscaping around the pool. We don’t provide grading or haul-off services as part of the installation.

The installation team will leave excess sand near the site. It’s more cost-effective to order a little extra sand than to pay for a second delivery if you come up short.

Expect some leftover dirt, especially on sloped sites. Some jobs also have rock in the ground, which can end up in your yard. It’s extremely important that dirt gets pushed up around the outside base of the pool to help contain the sand underneath.

How Should You Handle the Liner During the First Few Days?

Pool liners are designed to stretch slightly as they fill. Before using the pool, give the liner time to stretch under sunlight for a few days. Do not use the pool during this period. This prevents divots and footprints from forming in the pool floor and ensures a smoother, more even surface over time.

How Do You Fill Your Pool After Installation?

Filling your pool correctly protects the liner and the structure. Weather conditions and air temperature directly affect how quickly you can fill.

If the pool is filled at night or too quickly without sunlight reaching the water, the liner can buckle or sag. These issues are usually cosmetic rather than structural, but they’re avoidable with the right approach.

  • For temperatures between 32 and 65 degrees, fill to 6 inches on the first day, then add only 2 to 3 inches per day on days with direct sunlight. Don’t add more than 3 inches unless the water temp hits 65 degrees. If it’s above 65 with direct sunlight, you can add up to 6 inches. Once you reach 24 inches, you can fill the remainder, but only on days when the sun is reaching the pool.
  • For temperatures 65 degrees and warmer, continue filling as long as direct sunlight is reaching the pool. Stop when the sun goes down. The next day, resume filling in sunlight. After you reach 24 inches, you can fill the rest.

Do not enter the pool or stand on the steps before it is completely full. Walking on the sand bottom will leave footprints and heel marks that are not covered under the installation guarantee.

We do not recommend “quick fill” methods like water tankers, fire hydrants, or multiple hoses. If those are your only options, only fill when the temperature is above 75 degrees with direct sunlight, and use the lowest water pressure available.

What Weekly Maintenance Does an Above Ground Pool Need?

Keeping your pool clean and safe is straightforward once you get into a routine.

  • Test your water balance weekly using test strips. Check pH (7.2 to 7.6), alkalinity (80 to 120 ppm), and calcium hardness (100 to 400 ppm). You can also bring a water sample to any Galaxy showroom for a free professional test.
  • Add your sanitizer based on the system you’re using, whether that’s chlorine, salt, copper ionization, or another method. Stay on top of your dosing schedule and adjust based on weather, usage, and bather load.
  • Shock your pool weekly, or after heavy rain or heavy use. Shocking oxidizes contaminants and helps your sanitizer work more effectively.
  • Skim debris, brush walls, and vacuum regularly. Robotic vacuums handle the heavy lifting if you want a hands-off option.
  • Check your filter pressure. For sand filters, backwash when the gauge reads 7 to 10 psi above normal running pressure, then rinse for half the time you backwashed. For cartridge filters, clean when the psi is 8 to 10 above your baseline.

How Do You Properly Balance Pool Water?

How Do You Properly Balance Pool Water?

Balanced water protects your swimmers, your liner, and your equipment. When water chemistry is off, it can cause liner damage, equipment corrosion, cloudy water, algae growth, burning eyes and skin, and even unsafe swimming conditions.

The key levels to monitor are pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, and your sanitizer level. pH should stay between 7.2 and 7.6. Low pH can cause the liner to grow, wrinkle, and stain. High pH accelerates aging, shortens liner life, and makes your sanitizer less effective. Both extremes cause skin and eye irritation.

Total alkalinity acts as a buffer to keep pH stable. It should stay between 80 and 120 ppm. If it drops below 60, your pH will swing constantly, and you may see cloudy or green water. If it goes above 120, you can get cloudiness, scale buildup, and conditions that promote algae.

Calcium hardness should be between 100 and 400 ppm. Check it regularly to prevent problems with the liner and filter system.

Test your water regularly with strips at home, and bring a sample to any Galaxy showroom for a free professional analysis.

How Do You Operate a Sand Filter System?

Always turn the pump off before changing the valve position, and only turn the multi-port valve clockwise. There’s a gasket inside that will tear if turned the other direction.

  • Filter position is where you’ll run the system most of the time. We recommend running your pump 24/7 on low speed, or no less than 12 hours a day, to prevent algae and reduce chemical costs.
  • Backwash position churns the sand and runs water backward through the filter to flush trapped debris. Use this when the pressure gauge reads 7 to 10 psi above your normal running pressure. Backwash for about 1 to 2 minutes, then switch to Rinse for half that time. Rinsing compacts the sand so it doesn’t blow back into the pool through the return jet.
  • Waste/Drain position is for lowering the water level or vacuuming algae and heavy debris. Keep a garden hose running in the pool when vacuuming on waste, and never let the water drop below the skimmer.
  • Recirculate/Whirlpool position circulates water without passing through the sand. This is rarely used and only recommended if we specifically advise it.
  • Closed/Test position is used when checking the pump basket, cleaning the filter, or replacing components.
  • Winterize position is used when closing the pool for the season.

The first time you start the system, begin on backwash for 1 to 2 minutes, switch to rinse for 30 seconds, then move to filter. This clears sand from the lines and prevents it from entering the pool.

How Do You Operate a Cartridge Filter System?

Start by noting your baseline PSI on the pressure gauge when the filter is new and clean. This number is your reference point for knowing when to clean.

To start up, make sure water is at the middle of the skimmer and all valves are open. Open the air pressure release valve on top of the housing. Turn the pump on. When water starts coming out of the release valve instead of air, close it immediately. Check the PSI and note your baseline.

If you notice small leaks after installation, turn off the pump, close all valves, and check the o-rings on the filter canister, pump trap body lid, and the bridge between the pump and filter. Make sure they’re clean and seated properly. When replacing the canister lid, press it down firmly without twisting, as twisting can pop the o-ring out of place.

Clean your cartridge when the PSI reads 8 to 10 above baseline. For pumps with a low and high option, the gauge usually only registers on high speed.

How Do You Vacuum an Above Ground Pool?

Attach the telescopic pole and vacuum hose to the vacuum head, with the swivel cuff end on the head. Submerge the vacuum head and hose, then hold the free end of the hose in front of the return jet to fill it with water and push out all the air. Once the hose sinks to the bottom, connect it to the vacuum plate inside the skimmer.

For sand filter systems, vacuum on filter position unless you have algae or heavy debris, in which case vacuum to waste.
For cartridge filter systems, keep the filter in the canister unless there’s algae. For algae situations, remove the filter, close off the return line, and open the drain cap to vacuum to waste.

Always keep a garden hose running in the pool while vacuuming. If the water level drops low in the skimmer, stop and refill before continuing.

After vacuuming fine dirt, backwash and rinse your sand filter or spray off your cartridge filter.

How Do You Open Your Pool for the Season?

How Do You Open Your Pool for the Season?

Open your pool when the water temperature reaches about 60 degrees.

Start by cleaning all water and debris from the cover, then remove it. Fold the cover and soak it in a garbage pail with pool cover cleaner, let it dry, and store it.

Hook up your hoses and replace any plugs on the filter, pump, and motor. Make sure all o-rings and gaskets are in place. Remove any winter plugs from the return jet and skimmer, then fill with fresh water until it reaches the middle of the skimmer.

For sand filters, start on backwash for 2 minutes, rinse for 15 to 30 seconds, then switch to filter. For cartridge filters, place a clean filter in the canister and replace the winter drain plug.

Vacuum and clean the pool, then let the pump run for 24 hours. After that, bring a water sample to any Galaxy showroom and we’ll test it and help you get the chemicals you need to balance your water for the season.

How Do You Winterize Your Pool?

How Do You Winterize Your Pool?

Close your pool after temperatures drop to highs of 60 to 65 degrees for a week.

Start with chemicals. Balance your water and add your final doses of sanitizer and shock based on your system (chlorine, Pristine Blue, Nature’s Pure, etc.).

Next, handle the plugs. Remove the eyeball or fountain from the return jet and insert a universal plug. For the skimmer, use a compensator so you don’t have to drain the water below the skimmer level. If you don’t use a compensator, you’ll need to drain to below the skimmer.

Cover the pool using an air pillow in the center (4’x4′ for pools up to 24′, 4’x8′ for 25′ to 33′ or ovals). Thread the cable through the cover grommets, spread the cover evenly, and tighten with the winch.

For equipment, unhook all hoses. If you use a Nature’s Pure or ClearBlue ionizer, unscrew the copper cell and bring both the cell and control pad inside. Pull the drain plug on your sand filter and set it to winterize. Remove the pump and bring it inside. 

For cartridge filters, open the pressure release, pull the drain plug, and bring in both the pump and the filter cartridge.

Beyond the pool purchase and standard installation, there are a few additional expenses to plan for.

Standard additional costs include electrical work for the pump and filter, sand for the pool bottom, water to fill the pool, and any permits required by your local jurisdiction.

Depending on your yard and preferences, you may also need to budget for landscaping and grading after installation, fencing to meet local safety codes, decking or hardscape around the pool, and accessories like ladders, covers, or sanitization upgrades.

Less common but possible costs include rock removal during the dig, retaining walls for sloped yards, dirt haul-off, mileage charges if you’re more than 30 miles from the nearest showroom, tree or stump removal, additional leveling beyond 6 inches, disassembly of an existing pool, moving overhead power lines or underground septic lines, and a sump pump if heavy rains hit during or shortly after the build.
